International Day of Democracy: Democratic Participation as a Foundation for Peace

Supporting democracy is an integral part of Finland’s foreign and development policy. On the International Day of Democracy, Finland highlights the interlinkages between democracy, human rights and the rule of law, which together form the foundation of peaceful, stable and resilient societies.

Around the world, Finland works with partners to strengthen democratic institutions, political participation and inclusive governance. Through Demo Finland, a unique cooperation organisation of all Finnish parliamentary parties, Finland shares its experience in multiparty democracy and supports political participation in partner countries.

In Kenya, for example, political parties have worked to strengthen internal democracy, transparency and accountability. The initiative has also helped establish a multiparty forum and increase the participation of young people in political processes.

Experience from around the world shows that inclusive institutions and meaningful participation help build trust and strengthen societies’ ability to address challenges peacefully. A free and active civil society fosters democracy and contributes to societal openness, accountability and public trust.

The work carried out by Demo Finland in Kenya is one example of Finland’s broader support for democracy worldwide. Through Finnish civil society organisations and international partners, Finland promotes democratic participation, dialogue and accountable institutions as part of its commitment to peace, security and sustainable development. Finland currently channels a record-high share of its Official Development Assistance through Finnish civil society organisations.
