Finland Launches UN Security Council Campaign with Midsummer-Themed Reception in New York

Finland officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2029–2030 with a distinctive Midsummer-themed reception at UN Headquarters, blending diplomacy with Nordic summer traditions.

Hosted by Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen, the event introduced Finland’s candidacy in a setting inspired by the country’s iconic Midsummer celebrations. Guests from UN member states experienced elements of Finnish summer culture, including activities as well as traditional food and drinks.

Finland’s campaign will run over the next two years, concluding with the Security Council elections in New York in June 2028.

“If elected in 2028, Finland would again work tirelessly to build common ground, inspired by the important role of the elected members of the Council,” said Minister Valtonen at the launch. “We would work together with all of you. Only together can we strengthen the UN’s ability to deliver on its promise of peace for all.”

Finland’s candidacy underscores its longstanding commitment to the multilateral system and our determination to play an active role in addressing global challenges through diplomacy and partnership. Finland will work to advance peace, put people first, and build partnerships that strengthen international cooperation, uphold international law and support a safe future for all.

Only together can we strengthen the UN’s ability to deliver on its promise of peace for all.
